What is Community
Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a commitment. A commitment between farmers and consumers. The farmer commits to producing high quality food for a person or group and the consumer commits to purchasing the food. The consumer benefits from knowing that high quality food is being produced just for them. They get fresh, locally grown food that has traveled a minimal distance from the soil in which it was grown. A CSA shareholder gets a connection to the land from a person, not from a grocery store shelf. A CSA shareholder’s food dollar stays within the community directly benefitting local farmers, the local economy, and the local landscape. The farmer benefits because the product is paid for at the beginning of the season, when costs for seeds and labor are highest and income is lowest. The farmer can also take pride in the fact that he knows the people he is feeding.

CSA is an opportunity for consumers and
producers alike to support several important
movements in agriculture:

*Support sustainable and environmentally
responsible agriculture

*Allow farms to diversify their crops

*Provide consumers a link to family farms and locally grown products

*Enable consumers to get to know the people
who produce and supply their food
